Former ICT Cabinet Secretary Margaret Ndung’u has declined President William Ruto’s nomination for an ambassadorial position.
In a letter dated January 9 and addressed to the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations, Ndung’u turned down her appointment as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana, citing personal reasons.
Ndung’u’s nomination came shortly after her removal as ICT Cabinet Secretary on December 19, following a brief three-month tenure. William Kabogo was named her replacement.
President Ruto had included Ndung’u in a list of nominees for diplomatic roles, alongside other former officials. The list featured former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba as Kenya’s representative to the United Nations Environment Programme, Dorothy Angote as High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, and Andrew Karaja as ambassador to Brazil.
Ndung’u’s decision makes her the second high-ranking figure to reject a diplomatic nomination under President Ruto’s administration. Earlier, former Mugirango MP Vincent Mogaka declined his appointment as High Commissioner to Ghana, citing family obligations.
In a letter to the National Assembly, Mogaka expressed appreciation for the opportunity but emphasized that personal circumstances prevented him from accepting the role. He noted that his withdrawal would provide space for other candidates to undergo the vetting process.
