Residents of Homa Bay County are reeling after a Maseno University employee was brutally killed in a suspected land dispute, sending shockwaves through the local community and raising fresh concerns over deadly land-related conflicts.

The victim, Dr. Daniel Odhiambo Dondi, a finance officer at Maseno University, was attacked on Saturday evening while returning home in Kabong’o Village, Kokwanyo East Location, Rachuonyo East Sub-county. According to preliminary reports, the assailant allegedly lay in wait before launching a violent attack using a sharp weapon near the victim’s home.

Family members say the suspect is believed to have ambushed Dr. Dondi after a long-running dispute over a land boundary. The attack reportedly occurred moments after the university employee had left his farm, with relatives claiming the confrontation escalated without warning.

The victim sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene despite desperate efforts to raise the alarm. His death has left relatives, colleagues, and residents devastated as investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police have since confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the killing. The individual is being held at Ringa Police Station as detectives continue investigations before formal court proceedings. Authorities have also transferred Dr. Dondi’s body to Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

The tragic incident has renewed public concern over the growing number of violent disputes linked to land ownership in parts of the country. Community leaders are urging residents to pursue legal channels when resolving boundary disagreements instead of resorting to violence.
