A wave of fury erupted on Friday as an enraged mob set a private van ablaze following a harrowing road accident that left four students and a boda boda rider seriously injured. The incident, which has reignited nationwide debates regarding public safety and the increasing trend of mob justice, occurred when the vehicle struck the motorcycle near a busy school zone.
According to eyewitnesses, the collision occurred as the boda boda rider was ferrying the four students. The impact was described as devastating, with all five victims thrown onto the tarmac. As the students lay critically injured on the road, a crowd of onlookers and local boda boda operators quickly descended on the scene, accusing the van driver of reckless driving.
The situation escalated rapidly as the crowd turned violent. Ignoring the injured victims, a section of the mob directed their anger at the van, dousing it in petrol and setting it on fire. The vehicle was reduced to a shell of twisted metal within minutes, as emergency responders and police struggled to gain access to the scene amidst the chaos.
“It was an act of raw anger,” one witness stated. “People were overwhelmed by the sight of school children in such a state, and they simply decided to take the law into their own hands.”
Police have since arrived to disperse the crowd and manage the aftermath. While investigations into the primary accident are ongoing, senior officers have expressed deep concern over the pattern of vehicle torching that continues to plague the region. Authorities warned that such retaliatory attacks only serve to destroy crucial evidence and obstruct the delivery of justice for the victims.
The four students and the rider were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment for multiple fractures and head injuries. As the community reels from the dual trauma of the accident and the subsequent arson, local leaders are calling for immediate calm, urging the public to allow the judicial process to take its course rather than resorting to mob violence.
