NCIC Targets Top Politicians for Hate Speech as Political Tensions Explode!

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a stern warning to politicians over the increasing cases of hate speech, particularly on social media.

NCIC Vice Chairperson Wambui Nyutu revealed that investigations into several lawmakers, including Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Farah Maalim (Dadaab), and Dan Wanyama (Webuye West), have been concluded. Their files have been forwarded to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), urging action against them.

“We have identified over 10 politicians, including Farah Maalim, Dan Wanyama, and Oscar Sudi, who have used inflammatory language capable of inciting violence. Their files are now with the DCI, and if arrests, charges, and prosecutions follow, it will be a step in the right direction,” Nyutu told the press.

During a separate press briefing on January 23, NCIC Chairperson Samuel Kobia and other commissioners raised concerns about the escalating use of divisive language among political leaders, particularly as the next General Election is over two years away.

“We are deeply troubled by the rise in inflammatory rhetoric, bordering on hate speech and ethnic contempt, which has dominated public spaces and social media,” the Commission stated.

Kobia emphasized the urgent need to restore decorum and responsible discourse among leaders. “The statements we’ve observed recently are unacceptable and have no place in Kenya. We demand an immediate end to this behavior,” he said.

The NCIC also reminded political figures of the limits of free speech under Article 33 of the 2010 Constitution. While the Constitution protects freedom of expression, it does not permit incitement to violence, hate speech, or advocacy that fosters ethnic division and discrimination.

Referencing the National Cohesion Act 2008, the NCIC reiterated that the law protects all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.

This warning comes amid rising political tensions, with leaders using inflammatory language to target opponents for strategic gains, even as the General Election is more than 30 months away.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recently made headlines with serious accusations against President William Ruto during a live social media session. Meanwhile, Ruto has been touring Western Kenya, launching development projects while criticizing Gachagua for alleged divisive politics.

Allies of the President, such as Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, have been vocal online, with provocative posts supporting Ruto and attacking Gachagua. A viral post on X (formerly Twitter) accused Gachagua of hypocrisy, citing contradictions in his statements from his time in government.

Similarly, Gachagua’s supporters have not remained silent. Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba recently questioned the source of funds Ruto used to issue bonuses to sugarcane farmers in Mumias.

As political tensions continue to rise, the NCIC has urged leaders to exercise caution and prioritize national unity over personal or political interests.
