Tensions reached a breaking point at the Kanyuambora Police Post in Mbeere North, Embu County, on Saturday as an aggrieved family staged a dramatic protest by dumping the body of their kin at the station gates. The grieving relatives, accompanied by outraged residents, demanded immediate transparency and accountability regarding the mysterious death of 29-year-old Chrispin Munene.
Munene’s death, which his family describes as a result of gross police negligence and brutality, has ignited a fresh wave of public anger against law enforcement in the region. According to family accounts, the victim was allegedly assaulted by a group of men over unsubstantiated theft allegations and subsequently delivered to the police post in critical condition at approximately 11 a.m. on the day of the incident.
The family alleges that despite his visibly deteriorating state, police officers failed to provide immediate medical assistance. It was not until 4 p.m.—five hours after his arrival at the station—that he was finally transported to Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“We want the Occurrence Book read publicly so that everyone can know exactly what happened to our brother while in custody,” stated Samuel Kivuti, the victim’s brother, during the standoff. The family has vowed to halt all burial preparations until a thorough and transparent explanation is provided by the authorities.
The incident has deeply unsettled the local community, with residents raising concerns over their safety when dealing with law enforcement. This latest tragedy follows a series of reports regarding alleged police misconduct in the Ishiara area, including recent protests over the deteriorating state of local healthcare facilities.
As of Sunday morning, the National Police Service had yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations or the events recorded in the station’s logbook. The body has since been moved to the hospital mortuary as the community waits for an investigation to determine if the death was a result of custodial neglect or prior physical assault.
