Senator Cherargei Slams Uhuru for Backing Trump’s Aid Suspension, Calls Him a Hypocrite
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has strongly criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta for endorsing U.S. President Donald Trump’s move to halt financial aid to Kenya and other nations.
Cherargei’s backlash comes after Uhuru urged President William Ruto’s administration to stop complaining about Trump’s decision, arguing that Kenya should learn to be self-reliant instead of expecting foreign assistance.
“I don’t understand why some people are upset about Trump cutting aid. America isn’t obligated to fund us—we don’t pay taxes there. Instead of lamenting, we should ask ourselves how to sustain our own economy,” Uhuru stated.
However, Cherargei took issue with Uhuru’s remarks, accusing him of hypocrisy.
In a social media post, the senator pointed out that Uhuru’s government heavily relied on foreign loans, ballooning Kenya’s debt from KSh 1.3 trillion when he took office to KSh 11.5 trillion by 2022, yet with little to show in terms of development.
“Uhuru, who now criticizes Africa and Kenya for depending on foreign aid, is the same leader who drowned the country in debt. When he left office, our foreign debt had skyrocketed, yet there was no tangible progress,” Cherargei wrote.
He also questioned why the former president, who once admitted that Kenya loses KSh 2 billion daily to corruption, was now backing Trump’s decision to cut aid.
“Why the sudden change in stance? He himself confessed that Kenya was bleeding billions daily due to corruption. Now he acts like he was never part of the problem,” Cherargei added.
