Safina Party leader and businessman Jimi Wanjigi has declared his readiness to form alliances with any leader or movement centred on a clear, issue-based agenda rather than traditional ethnic mobilization.
Speaking during an interview with a local station on Thursday, April 16, 2026, Wanjigi emphasized that the era of tribal arithmetic in Kenyan politics is over, replaced by a growing demand for economic liberation and government accountability.
Wanjigi, who has become one of the most vocal critics of President William Ruto’s administration, stated that his doors are open to like-minded individuals who prioritize the country’s economic survival.
Wanjigi further noted that Kenya has historically been subjected to different forms of domination, first during the colonial era and later through what he termed ‘internal systems of control’ after independence.
He noted that Kenyans have been slaves for a number of years, adding that whether to the mzungus in the colonial era or to the African mzungus since independence, masked in tribal cocoons.
“We have been slaves, whether to mzungus in the colonial era or to African mzungus since independence, masked in tribal cocoons. We have been slaves as Kenyans to a class of people up here,” Wanjigi said.
He proposed a radical policy of non-payment of what he calls illegal debt, which he says will save the country at least 2 trillion shillings per year.
“At the end of the day, it is about each and every one of our lives, and we have clearly diagnosed the problem we are facing today. That is the debt issue. The debt, no matter what you do, is our slavery. It is taking away 80 per cent to 90 per cent of whatever we are earning,” Wanjigi said.
“So our policy is this, and we will join up with anybody who subscribes and agrees to this policy. What is illegal to us in terms of that debt, we shall not pay. Which means that we have a saving of a minimum of 2 trillion per year. Money that we generate that does not currently go out to debt because it’s illegal.”
