Sifuna vs ODM: Tribunal Orders Internal Dispute Resolution

The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal has given Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) a directive to resolve their dispute over his removal as Secretary General internally. The tribunal wants them to use the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Mechanism (IDRM) to sort things out before coming back to the tribunal.

According to reports, Sifuna went to the tribunal claiming his removal was not only unlawful but also went against the party’s constitution and the Political Parties Act. He wanted the tribunal to stop ODM from implementing the decision and also stop the Registrar of Political Parties from making any changes.

The tribunal did put a temporary hold on ODM’s National Executive Committee’s decision to remove Sifuna, made on February 11, 2026, pending the internal resolution. Acting PPDT chairperson Gad Gathu emphasized that any disciplinary action taken by ODM must follow the party’s constitution and relevant laws, while also preserving the right to return to the tribunal if needed.

ODM, on the other hand, argued that Sifuna rushed to the tribunal without exhausting the party’s internal dispute resolution processes. The tribunal noted that this case highlights the need for stronger internal democracy within political parties.

In the end, the tribunal decided to strike out the case, with each party covering their own costs, encouraging Sifuna and ODM to resolve the matter internally 🙄.
