President William Ruto has ordered the immediate removal of a contractor from a road project site in Nyaribari Chache Constituency, Kisii County, accusing him of incompetence and deliberate delays that have stalled service delivery.
The project, awarded in 2018 and launched during his tenure as Deputy President, remains incomplete years later, sparking frustration among residents.
In a firm directive, the President instructed the contractor to vacate the site with immediate effect, paving the way for a new contractor to take over and fast-track completion of the road.
Fast forward to today, when the President returned to the same site, he found the road works still stalled after years of delays and unfulfilled deadlines.
An angered President Ruto questioned how a contractor could remain on site for eight years without completing the project, terming it a sabotage of service delivery.
“Huyo contractor anaitwa Mahan mwambie atoke kwa barabara yangu aende huko achome makaa,” said William Ruto, President of Kenya.
But what has raised concern is that the same contractor accused of delaying the Sosera–Ramasha–Ekona–Kiomiti road had also expressed interest in additional work, including new road projects within Kisii County.
“DG, huyo contractor sitaki kumuona kwa barabara tena, huyo ameshindwa na kazi,” said Ruto.
According to documents, the Kenya Rural Roads Authority was in 2020 expected to issue a second notice to Mahan Limited, the contractor accused of stalling work on the project.
The company had earlier written to the agency in 2019, citing delays caused by harsh and unexpected weather conditions that disrupted earthworks. The President insisted that the contractor be removed immediately from all related projects.
“Atoke kwa hiyo barabara na atoke kwa barabara ya Sosera, tafuta contractor mwingine kwa sababu tuko na pesa ya kutosha kujenga hizi barabara,” said the president.
Despite apparent jitters within the broad-based government, ODM Deputy Party Leader and Kisii Governor Simba Arati, who hosted the President for a third day in Kisii County, affirmed that the region will continue supporting the arrangement.
“Baba wakati alituacha alituacha hapa kwa broad-based na mimi kama deputy party leader wa ODM nimesema tutasalia ndani ya broad-based na tutatengeneza serikali ijayo pamoja,” said Kisii Governor Simba Arati.
