President Ruto Blasts Opposition Over Alleged Plans for Nationwide Protests, Warns of Chaos

President William Ruto has launched a blistering response to mounting calls by opposition politicians to organize nationwide demonstrations, accusing his critics of seeking to incite unrest and lure young people into destructive activities for political gain. His remarks, delivered on 6 February 2026 in Mkomani, Mombasa County, sharply heighten political tension as Kenya approaches the 2027 general elections.

Ruto declared to the NYOTA program beneficiaries that opposition groups should stop their protests because they will create chaos and lead to undesired results. He accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his opposition partners of creating youth recruitment programs to launch demonstrations that would disrupt public order and obstruct government operations.

Ruto reported that protesters planned to hold nationwide demonstrations that would target young Kenyans for their movements. He warned that such mobilization could inflict severe damage on Kenya’s already fragile economy and hamper development progress.

Ruto claimed that opposition groups have no valid plans for economic growth, which primarily involves creating job opportunities for youth who are currently unemployed and empowering people economically. The president challenged opposition leaders to present tangible policy proposals instead of focusing on slogans or attempts to unsettle governance structures.

The president’s remarks come in the context of recent opposition pronouncements, which include threats of mass demonstrations that relate to two unresolved issues. The first issue involves alleged violent incidents that occurred at a church service in Othaya, and the second issue involves security agencies. Some opposition factions have warned of nationwide protests if these demands are not met, which has created more intense political disputes.
