Mwengi Mutuse Sheds Light on Ruto’s Involvement in Gachagua Impeachment

Mutuse, who made history with his motion, recently revealed that President William Ruto was hesitant about impeaching Gachagua.

During the peak of political unrest in September and October 2024, Kenyans wondered why President Ruto remained noticeably silent while Gachagua was under heavy scrutiny. Some even accused the President of wielding his influence and connections in the legislature to remove Gachagua.

However, as per Mutuse, he did not discuss the motion with the President but learned from Ruto’s associates that the President was uncertain if impeachment was the suitable approach to address former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

“We did not converse about the motion,” Mutuse stated. “In fact, the information we received early on suggested that the President was somewhat cautious. He was uncertain if it was the appropriate decision. “

Mutuse elaborated on the roots of the impeachment motion, stating it originated from worried Kenyans who believed the nation was veering off course due to the discord between President William Ruto and his deputy.

This led Mutuse, who also operates a law firm in Kilimani, to reach out to Kimani Ichung’wah and Junet Mohammed – the majority and minority leaders, respectively, who backed the motion.

He added, “They (Junet and Ichung’wah) requested that I provide them with a draft to review. After examining it, they became interested. They assisted me in rallying Members of Parliament to endorse the motion. “

Mutuse then gathered several of his legal colleagues and undertook thorough research to construct a case against Gachagua, a process he claims spanned at least one month.

The MP further disclosed attempts from Gachagua’s team to pressure him into withdrawing the motion, but he had already made his decision. Mutuse clarified that the former Deputy President did not reach out to him directly.

Following the successful impeachment motion, Mutuse was predictably celebrated as a hero by some and deemed a traitor by others, leading to an increase in his security after Gachagua’s removal.

Despite his lack of commentary, Ruto spoke for the first time in October regarding Gachagua’s impeachment, urging the nation to remain united while suggesting that his former deputy engaged in tribal politics.

While addressing the Tobong’u Lore Turkana Festival, he emphasized that he would not tolerate tribal, divisive, and dismissive politics in the country.

“We do not want tribal, divisive and dismissive politics. We want to come together as the people of Kenya. ”
