Governor Mwangaza’s Reconciliation Efforts in Meru Hit a Snag

Crisis in Meru asGovernor Kawira Mwangaza’s Attempted Reconciliation with MCAs Backfires

Tensions are escalating in Meru County as Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s efforts to reconcile with her Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have significantly failed.

MCAs did not attend a peace meeting held at her residence yesterday.

Mwangaza had organized a development forum at her home, intending to address issues with the MCAs.

However, the growing divide between the executive and the assembly was evident when the MCAs rejected her invitation, alleging that the governor had hidden agendas.

The MCAs firmly believe that Mwangaza aimed to use the forum to bolster her legitimacy.

Deputy Speaker of the Meru County Assembly, Mwenda Ali, had previously warned of the meeting’s likely failure, stating that none of the 49 MCAs who voted for her impeachment wished to engage with her forum.

“We are not prepared for her meeting. She can conduct that with her allies. We have been seeking responses from the executive without receiving any. The MCAs acted responsibly in removing the governor from office for failing in her duties,” he stated.

Following the unsuccessful meeting, Mwangaza remained resolute, asserting that she maintains cordial relations with the majority of the MCAs in Meru County.

“This commotion does not reflect the common mwananchi (citizen). It stems from six MCAs influencing the others,” she remarked, adding, “I invited the MCAs today so that any questions or issues could be resolved. But they chose not to show up. “

Minority Leader Mwenda Ithili criticized Mwangaza for convening a meeting focused on development, suggesting that the governor should proceed with the projects she wanted to discuss.

Mwangaza’s governorship is precarious, with 49 out of 69 MCAs voting for her impeachment.

However, she successfully obtained a court order to halt her impeachment.
