In what may seem like mockery to Kenyans, Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has advocated for the removal of presidential term limits.
This comes despite Kenyans rejecting the initiative to extend President William Ruto’s term to 7 years.
Nevertheless, during an interview yesterday, Atwoli criticized Kenyans for opposing the government’s attempts to remove presidential term limits.
“Let us eliminate the term limit. This is what creates problems for us. Someone is planning after 10 years, I want to be president. Are Ugandans facing the same issues we face here? ” stated Atwoli.
“Politics has become an industry. Every day is filled with politics from morning to evening. Because they realize James’ term is nearly over,” he added.
Kenyans have recently expressed their frustration with UDA Senator Samson Cherargei, who is trying to modify Article 136 of the Constitution to extend the term of the president—as well as elected officials—from five to seven years.
According to the law, a president can serve a maximum of two five-year terms. However, Cherargei, a close associate of President William Ruto, contended that the current duration is insufficient for an elected president or other elected officials to carry out their constitutional duties.
Nonetheless, the Bill was rejected, yet discussions regarding the contentious proposal continue.
