Raila Odinga Confident in AUC Bid as Elections Approach

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga expressed confidence in winning next week’s elections for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

Speaking on Saturday, he conveyed optimism that African leaders would support his candidacy. Raila mentioned that he has traveled across the continent to share his vision with Heads of State and government, emphasizing his commitment to improving the lives of Africans.

“We have engaged with leaders throughout Africa, discussing our vision for a united Africa, and I am confident in my election as AUC chairman. I will perform my duties to the best of my ability alongside fellow leaders to enhance the lives of our people,” he stated.

Raila will compete against Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. The three candidates engaged in a televised debate on December 13, 2024, where they presented their plans for advancing Africa in line with the AU Mandate and Africa’s Agenda 2063.

The winner will succeed Moussa Faki from Chad, whose term ends next year. The new chairperson will be chosen at the 38th AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 15 and 16, following the election of AU Commissioners on February 12. A candidate must achieve a two-thirds majoritysupport from 33 of the 55 countriesto secure the role.
