IEBC Summons Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria Over Voter Bribery Allegations

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially summoned Nakuru Town East Member of Parliament, David Gikaria, to appear before its electoral code of conduct committee. The summons follows a flurry of formal complaints and evidence submitted regarding allegations of voter bribery and gross violations of the electoral code of conduct within his constituency.

The Commission’s decision to intervene comes amid growing public outcry and escalating tensions as the country approaches a critical period of by-elections. According to the electoral body, the summons is aimed at addressing reports that the legislator was involved in the distribution of financial inducements to voters in a bid to influence their choice of candidates.

In a statement released on Monday, July 13, 2026, the IEBC warned that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding election offenses. “The commission has received credible reports and evidence alleging the involvement of David Gikaria in activities that contravene the Elections Act and the Electoral Code of Conduct,” the statement noted. “He is required to appear before the committee to answer to these allegations and provide his response to the evidence presented.”

The allegations against the MP have sparked a heated debate in Nakuru, with rival political factions demanding his immediate disqualification from any involvement in upcoming electoral processes. Witnesses claim to have seen the MP and his team distributing cash to residents during recent campaign rallies, an act that is strictly prohibited under the current election regulations.

This move by the IEBC signals a tougher stance against political misconduct, with the commission signaling that it is prepared to exercise its full mandate, including the possible nullification of candidacies for those found in breach of the law.

If found guilty, the MP could face severe sanctions, including hefty fines, disqualification from holding public office, or criminal prosecution. The hearing is scheduled to take place at the IEBC headquarters, with all eyes on the commission to see if it will uphold the integrity of the electoral process in the face of influential political figures.
