Tragedy in Kisumu: Former MP David Were’s Son Murdered in Brutal Night Attack

The family of the former Matungu Member of Parliament David Were is in mourning right now after the cold-blooded murder of his 39-year-old son Hannington Were in a brutal night assault in Kisumu.

These killings happened in the early hours of Sunday, May 24, 2026, and they have really shaken the region while also triggering fierce anger over what many people are calling a worsening sense of insecurity.

Hannington, who worked as a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), was waylaid at about 1:00 am along Nyerere Road while he was walking toward Mamba Hotel, together with a friend.

As David Were explained, the two chose to proceed on foot because there was simply no transport available in that area at that time. Sadly, their route was cut short near Makini School, where assailants, described as boda boda riders, confronted them.

“They chose to walk because there were no boda bodas along the way. But when they reached Makini School, they were attacked by boda boda riders,” David Were said, sounding visibly pained.

The attackers allegedly struck Hannington on the head using a metal rod and then stabbed him twice in the back. Even after they rushed him to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), he was later declared dead on arrival.

His companion, who suffered serious injuries too, is now still battling for his life at the same hospital. For now the reason behind the attack has not been established, as investigators have not yet confirmed whether the victims were robbed.

This latest tragedy has left the former MP grappling with unimaginable grief, as it marks the second time in just four months that he has lost a son to violence.

Another of his sons was killed under mysterious circumstances in Nairobi this past January. A devastated Were has called for urgent, comprehensive investigations, describing the back-to-back losses as a harrowing pattern of unresolved crime.

Police in Kisumu have launched a man hunt for the suspects and have intensified patrols in the area as the community demands swift justice for the fallen civil servant.
