The History About Sagging

It is all known that sagging is a common fashion that can be seen out there on daily basis and its existence is as old as the beginning of Africa’s colonization.Sagging as a style of dress originates within the African American community with hip-pop artists and rappers leading the way.

The duo Kriss-Kross usually perform in gigantic sagging trousers worn backwards.Secondly, Sagging of trousers have history in the American prison system. It signifies same sex affair amongst prisoners and their fellow prisoners.

Since prisoners are not allowed to wear their belts because it can be used as a weapon in the prison, this becomes an avenue for them to have easy access to each other. You sometimes find prisoners having sexual affair with each other and once you are seen with a saggy trouser, it simply means that you are ready and willing for sexual affair (in prison-dom).

During colonial era, some black men would be taken to a public place and will be asked to lower down their pants/trousers and bend forward. At this point, the master would brutally rape all the men that were asked to sag their trousers.

And After this act of violation, the slaves would be forced to wear their trousers without any belt as an evidence that they have been raped by their masters. But today, people who sag their trousers and pants believe that they are free to dress how they choose and I find this very ironical because this fashion statement originates from the context of slavery serves as a significant symbol of slavery.
