The senior Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga explained the party’s position on Edwin Sifuna after the troubled politician faced suspension from the party instead of permanent expulsion. The opposition party faces internal conflicts, which have become the main focus of national news coverage.
Oburu wanted to prove that reports about Sifuna losing his membership in the party reached their endpoint during his Nairobi press conference yesterday. Oburu explained that the National Executive Committee ordered Sifuna to stay away from his duties until the internal investigation concluded about his alleged misconduct and discipline violations, which he considered to be non-punitive administrative action.
Oburu stated that the party did not expel Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna because all reports about his expulsion contained false information. He was requested to suspend his regular duties until the party investigated the claimed misbehavior.
The clarification follows weeks of political tumult after ODM’s leadership attempted to remove Sifuna from his post as Secretary-General, igniting fierce debate among party loyalists and political observers. Sifuna has mounted legal challenges to the move and insists he remains the duly elected Secretary-General, accusing some factions within ODM of orchestrating a power grab.
The party maintains its dedication to legal procedures, according to Oburu, who explained that ODM’s constitution contains methods for handling internal conflicts and the step-aside request served to create unbiased treatment. Oburu declared that “The party wishes to uphold unity and fairness.” All party members need to follow the internal procedures that have been established by the organization, according to us.
The episode maintains its ability to create speculation about hidden divisions that exist within ODM while also showing doubts about the party’s capacity to prepare for the upcoming general elections in 2027. Political analysts say the public attention on the dispute could have broader implications for opposition cohesion as Kenya’s political landscape becomes increasingly contested.
Sifuna’s camp has responded to the most recent statement by showing its commitment to explore every legal option, which confirms that the ODM internal conflict remains ongoing.
