Ruto Fires Warning Shot at Opposition Over Silence on Youth Agenda

President William Ruto has not held back in his criticism of Kenya’s opposition leaders, claiming that they have not come up with a convincing plan for the youth of the nation and that their actions have only served to worsen the political division, which could very well alter the election scenario of 2027.

His biting criticism, given during a high-profile public address in Nairobi on Thursday, has stirred not only the political circles but also social media, as Ruto tightens the noose around his opponents before the next general elections.

During his speech, Ruto accused the opposition leaders of being “eerily silent” regarding the policies aimed at youth unemployment, entrepreneurship, education, and the like, which are immensely impacting the Kenyan population less than 35 years old.

He further stated that the mute position taken by the youths and the opposition undermines public trust in leadership that is alternative and keeps the country in a loop of economic exclusion of the youths.

“Political discourse can be meaningful only if those aiming to lead can tell the youth what their plans for upliftment are,” Ruto asserted. “Leadership should be built on solutions, not on empty words.”

His statements appeared to be specifically aimed at calling into question the opposition’s legitimacy and simultaneously at rallying his core supporters at an essential moment in the political life of the nation.

The President’s criticism is very much directed towards opposition leaders who have been criticizing the government’s youth policy but at the same time have not been able to provide any concrete, alternative ideas.

Ruto has expressly cautioned against political popularity that is more concerned with showing off through rallies and less with the policy’s real benefits; hence, he predicted that if the opposition leaders fail to come up with a youth agenda that has good traction, they would lose the young votes.

Analysts view Ruto’s words as a deliberate move to secure youth support amidst diminishing financial resources. The very problem of youth unemployment continues to be the major issue of the nation; thus, Ruto’s statement could very well compel the opposition parties to hurry up their policy proposals or else suffer a backlash in the eyes of the public due to a lack of ideas.

The opposition groups have not officially responded to Ruto’s criticism so far; however, sources from within the parties say that they are working on their policy proposals and drafting strategic briefs that will highlight youth-oriented policies. One spokesperson from an opposition coalition mentioned that they would reply at the proper time and that a united rebuttal could be on the way.
