The political situation in Kenya faces imminent danger because of unrest that will occur after opposition leaders issue their final demand to the Inspector General of Police to arrest individuals who they claim conducted a deliberate assault against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The opposition leaders issued their demands, which required police actions before February 16, 2026.
The United Opposition leaders from Nairobi presented their case to the press during a press conference on January 30, when Mr. Gachagua introduced 12 police officers who they claimed participated in the violent incident that occurred at ACK Witima Church in Othaya on January 25. The officers must face arrest and the disarmament process, followed by court charges within two weeks, or citizens will demonstrate to protest their release.
The church disturbance took place during a worship service that gathered hundreds of attendees when teargas canisters were thrown into the church. Mr. Gachagua’s motorcade faced an attack during which assailants punctured his vehicle tires and set his vehicle on fire, which forced his safety team to carry him through challenging paths.
The opposition used their ultimatum to declare that the Othaya violence which occurred during the election period constituted an assassination attempt which a police special operations team executed. The leaders believe that government officials who fail to execute their duties will lead to government lawbreaking behavior, which will make judicial power ineffective.
The nation needs Douglas Kanja to provide security to all citizens through his assurance about the police officer court appearances. The opposition manifesto declares that security officials and government officials will face “mass demonstrations,” which will continue until the government implements required security reforms when the police fail to deliver their required assurance before February 16.
Opposition leaders in Nairobi marched to the Office of the Inspector General of Police because they wanted to protest growing violence that targeted political candidates and their supporters. The procession drew significant public attention as it wound through the city’s Central Business District.
The upcoming protest serves as a potential danger which can restore intense political conflicts in Kenya because it creates a division between citizens who seek government accountability and an administration which undergoes scrutiny about its security operations and political activities.
