ODM in Turmoil as Sifuna and Osotsi Snub Crucial Party Meeting

In a development that is shaking up the whole of Kenya’s political opposition, two of the most prominent officials of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) were unavoidably absent from a crucial party consultative meeting held on Monday, January 12, which further raised concerns over the division within the party just before the elections of 2027.

According to photos posted by the party on social media and confirmed by KenyaLeo, ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and Deputy Party Leader Senator Godfrey Osotsi did not attend the emergency leaders’ forum called by party leader Oburu Oginga and other senior officials in Kilifi County.

Their nonappearance at the Central Management Committee meeting has brought about intense speculation over a power struggle that is slowly but surely becoming more pronounced inside the party. This meeting included the appointments of the governors of Mombasa and Kisii, Party Chairperson Gladys Wanga, and Director of Campaigns Junet Muhammad.

According to ODM sources, the agenda for the meeting on Monday was not just the usual consultations but rather the resolution of internal conflicts and the setting of the party’s strategy. Besides, the mention of coalition talks and placing the party in the center of the disputes around the question of partnerships with other political factions were among the key issues discussed.

The non-appearance of Sifuna and Osotsi has instantly raised concerns regarding their position in ODM, especially since the discussions about the party’s unity and leadership legitimacy have intensified after the passing of the former leader, Raila Odinga, in late 2025. Oburu Oginga took over as party leader in October 2025, a position that has already embroiled him in the struggle for power among the factions.

Political pundits regard the absence of the two senior personalities as an irrefutable sign of increased factionalism at the top level. Sifuna has particularly been in conflict with party members who advocate for the broader coalitions and has been warned about his influence and position.

ODM released statements declaring its dedication to unity and eventual growth; however, the open split among its leaders raises doubts about the party’s capacity to present a uniform front. With the next general election less than two years away, the perception of disunity could have an immediate negative impact on ODM’s strategic partnerships and electoral chances.
