Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni criticized Babu Owino during Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson bid launch.
Museveni mentioned receiving intelligence reports of Babu’s involvement with anti-NRM groups.
Yet, he clarified that he doesn’t associate Raila with Babu’s actions. Museveni acknowledged Raila as a nationalist and Pan-Africanist, distancing him from Babu’s activities.
Babu Owino has been seen supporting Ugandan opposition figure Bobi Wine in the past. This led to his ban from entering Uganda in 2018 for undermining Museveni’s administration.
Museveni was among the African leaders attending at Raila’s AUC bid launch. Other prominent figures like Samia Suluhu, Salva Kiir, and former Presidents Kikwete and Obasanjo also attended.
The event highlighted Museveni’s remarks on Babu Owino’s connections with anti-NRM groups, emphasizing his distinction between Babu and Raila.
The presence of various African leaders at Raila’s AUC bid launch showcased regional support for his candidacy. It also highlighted the political dynamics within the African Union Commission.
