Karua Demands Ruto Disclose Campaign Spending

Martha Karua, leader of the People’s Liberation Party, has urged President William Ruto to disclose the exact funds utilized for ODM leader Raila Odinga’s AUC campaigns.

Following the arrest of Juja MP George Koimburi on February 18, Karua stated that Kenyans are seeking accountability for campaign expenditures.

She criticized the arrest of the UDA lawmaker via her X account.

Additionally, she mentioned that a clear statement from Ruto would dispel rumors regarding the alleged billions spent on the campaigns.

“William Ruto should clarify the campaign spending instead of evading responsibility by targeting those inquiring about it,” she remarked.

Karua’s comments came after Koimburi’s arrest, which, according to associates of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was linked to his statements about campaign finances.

Koimburi claimed that Ksh13 billion was expended on the campaigns.

“Where did the Ksh13 billion go? Why allocate such a large sum to a losing campaign when it could have been used to complete stalled government projects nationwide? ” the MP questioned.

The government has not yet provided official figures on the campaign expenditures. However, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura asserted that the government exercised fiscal discipline during the campaigns.

“This matter will be addressed in detail soon. For now, we assure Kenyans that not much money was used for Raila’s campaign,” Mwaura said during a December 23, 2024, press briefing.
