Gachagua Recalls Avoiding Ruto During Controversial Project Launches

Speaking during a televised interview on NTV on Sunday evening, Gachagua, in response to corruption allegations in the government, especially during his tenure as Deputy President and the unpopular situation he found himself in, disclosed that some of the projects initiated by Ruto required him to find ways to avoid being viewed as involved.

Gachagua pointed out the Affordable Housing project launched by the President as one of the unpopular areas where he avoided his superior and interacted with the public at state events related to the project.

“The President was criticizing me for not attending housing launches. I informed him that the public was not interested in these houses. These citizens are the ones who have hired us for this role, and they are not interested,” he added.

Interestingly, Gachagua recounted that he would slip away from the President during events to hear the public’s opinions on the project.

To accomplish this, he noted that he would estimate how long Ruto would speak at the launch before he employed his evasion strategies.

“Many times I would accompany the President, and he would begin speaking on various topics for between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on his mood and the crowd’s reaction,” Gachagua noted.

“I would assess how long he was speaking because I had studied him. During this time, I would go and interact with the people. They would clearly express that they were not interested. “

Furthermore, the former Deputy President mentioned that most of his advisory opinions to the President were not taken seriously, primarily due to the perceived disagreements between him and his boss.

According to Gachagua, his avoidance of some governmental decisions led to a rift between him and his superior, stemming from several differences that mostly occurred behind the scenes and were largely concealed from the public.

He mentioned that he endeavored to defend the government against wrongdoing, but it became unmanageable when it became evident to the state that he could not justify corruption.

“I defended many issues, but when it came to matters of corruption and the misuse of public funds, I could not support them,” Gachagua asserted.

Additionally, the former Deputy President and a former lawmaker criticized Ruto’s programs and projects, including the Social Health Authority (SHA) and the affordable housing initiatives they undertook together while in office.

“Kenyans need to voice their concerns; Ksh104 billion is not an insignificant amount, it’s substantial, and experts have informed me that improving the current system within the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) could be done for a cost ranging from Ksh700 million to Ksh800 million,” Gachagua remarked.
