DCI arrest two suspects in Kisumu, recover Phantom pistol

Acting on intelligence, the officers mounted a carefully coordinated ambush along the highway, targeting a vehicle suspected of ferrying illegal weapons.

Their patience was rewarded when they intercepted the car, which was occupied by two individuals whose journey was abruptly cut short.

According to investigators, a detailed search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a Phantom pistol, a machete concealed in a black sheath, and three mobile phones believed to be used in coordinating criminal activities.

DCI described the seizure as a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb armed crime in the region.

The two suspects were immediately taken into custody and escorted to Maseno Police Station, where they are being processed pending arraignment.

Authorities also impounded the vehicle used in the operation, which is now being held as an exhibit alongside the recovered items.

Police say the recovered items will play a crucial role in the ongoing probe, which is expected to establish whether the suspects are linked to a wider criminal network operating in Kisumu and neighbouring counties.

The arrest adds to a growing list of recent operations targeting illegal arms possession in western Kenya.

In similar cases, security agencies have intensified crackdowns following increased reports of armed robberies and gang-related activities in parts of the region.

In a related incident earlier this month, two suspects were arrested in Isebania, Migori County, after detectives recovered a homemade firearm during an intelligence-led operation.

Officers from the DCI, working alongside K9 units from Isebania Police Station, raided a homestead in Nyametaburo Location following reports of illegal weapons possession.

During that operation, police discovered a homemade firearm hidden under a sofa set inside a suspect’s house. Several other items believed to be linked to criminal activity were also seized, including a twisted metal rod, a blue balaclava mask, a dotted dera dress, a black marvin, and

Authorities say such coordinated raids have been instrumental in dismantling criminal networks that have been troubling residents in various parts of the country.

In yet another operation in Igembe, detectives from DCI Laare, working jointly with officers from Laare Police Station, arrested suspects believed to be behind a string of robberies that had unsettled residents.

The suspects were apprehended during a planned raid based on intelligence reports linking them to organised criminal activity.
