President William Ruto has officially appointed Douglas Kanja as the new Inspector General of the National Police Service. This decision comes after Kanja received approval from the National Assembly, after a vetting process by the Senate.
His appointment is significant as it fills the vacancy left by Japhet Koome, who resigned from the position in July.
Douglas Kanja formerly served as the Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police. He has been acting in the role of Inspector General since Koome’s resignation.
His appointment is formalized through a gazette notice, which states that he will serve a term of four years. This transition marks a new chapter in the leadership of the National Police Service.
The appointment process involved multiple steps. This included vetting by the Senate and approval by the National Assembly. These steps highlight the procedural requirements for such a significant position in the Kenyan government.
Kanja has extensive experience in law enforcement. This is particularly clear from his earlier role as Deputy Inspector General. This positions him well to take on the responsibilities of the Inspector General.
After Kanja’s nomination, Gilbert Masengeli has been appointed as the Acting Inspector General. He is the Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police.
This change in leadership is expected to bring new strategies and approaches to the National Police Service. The service continues to handle various security challenges in the country.
