A political storm is brewing across Kenya as close allies of President William Ruto are flaunting staggering displays of newfound wealth, igniting fury and suspicion among citizens demanding answers.
The extravagant giveaways and jaw-dropping financial handouts have left many Kenyans stunned — and deeply skeptical. As whispers of misuse of public funds grow louder, questions about the true source of this sudden financial boom are becoming impossible to ignore.
Over the past few weeks, a wave of high-profile, high-budget “economic empowerment” events has swept through the country, led by the president’s inner circle. These events, marketed as grassroots economic upliftment, are raising eyebrows — and red flags — from village centers to the corridors of power.
In a particularly controversial case, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi turned heads after splashing an estimated Ksh45 million at a single event in Uasin Gishu County. Sudi handed out 100 motorcycles, 400 sewing machines, 500 car wash machines, cars, posho mills, deep fryers, vending kits, and more — all in one day.
He claims he and his associates footed the entire bill from their own pockets.
“I’ve seen people ranting online. Let me be clear — not a single cent from the government was used,” Sudi declared defiantly.
But many Kenyans aren’t buying it.
Adding fuel to the fire, President Ruto himself joined the weekend spending spree, dishing out Ksh9 million during three separate events. His deputy, Kithure Kindiki, added another Ksh4 million, defending the moves as part of a genuine empowerment mission.
“Those complaining are the same politicians who disappear once they’re elected,” Kindiki snapped back.
Yet critics see something far more dangerous unfolding — the possible collapse of public accountability.
Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi condemned the handouts as a betrayal of fair and transparent resource allocation, especially toward women’s groups.
Prominent political scholar Dr. Richard Bosire sounded the alarm, warning that Kenya’s democracy is being compromised.
“Incumbent leaders are barred from using public money, vehicles, or staff for partisan politics. But that’s exactly what’s happening — and it’s illegal,” Bosire said, calling the unregulated cash giveaways a clear abuse of power.
Even more scathing was governance expert Fred Ogola, who blasted Ruto’s administration as a “PR-driven government with no real economic agenda.”
“This country is becoming a failed state. Too much public relations, zero delivery. Are we safe? Can we afford healthcare? Is our education system working? These are the real questions — not staged empowerment shows,” Prof. Ogola declared.
As the nation watches the political elite toss millions like confetti, ordinary Kenyans are left asking: Who’s really paying the price?
