ODM party leader Raila Odinga has come out to defend a controversial and unexpected collaboration with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) — a decision that’s sparked confusion, outrage, and accusations of political betrayal.
Speaking during a press briefing, Odinga attempted to clarify the stormy alliance, saying:
“Yes, we’ve chosen to work with the government — but make no mistake, we are not part of the government!”
The remarks have ignited massive backlash online, as Kenyans struggle to make sense of the former opposition figure seemingly cozying up to President Ruto’s camp. Critics accuse Odinga of trying to enjoy the privileges of power while wearing the cloak of opposition.
“If half the cabinet is from your camp, how are you not in government?” wrote an X user, @EthanMundu, echoing thousands of furious posts.
“You can’t have your cake and eat it,” added another, calling Odinga’s explanation “deliberate political gymnastics.”
Despite the uproar, Odinga insists the ODM-UDA pact is a strategic move for national unity and peace, claiming it’s modeled after mature democracies like the United States — where opposing parties still collaborate for the good of the people.
“The MOU we signed is crystal clear — it’s available to the public. There’s nothing hidden,” Odinga stressed, baffled by the backlash.
Still, critics aren’t buying it, accusing the ODM leader of abandoning his watchdog role and undermining democracy in the name of peace. Others, however, praised the approach, with some Kenyans calling the deal a “bold step” towards unity and progress.
Devolution Bombshell
In another stunning moment, Odinga questioned the continued relevance of national road agencies like KURA, KERRA, and KeNHA, which he himself once helped create.
“These were needed under a centralized government. In the devolved era, they’ve outlived their purpose,” he said, suggesting major restructuring could be on the horizon.
