Nominated MP Sabina Chege has sparked a firestorm with her explosive remarks on the glaring inequalities in Kenya’s development, calling out the government for allowing some regions to thrive while others remain trapped in poverty.
Speaking during a radio show on Thursday, March 27, 2025, Chege, a veteran politician who served as Woman Representative for a decade, painted a disturbing picture of the economic disparity plaguing the nation.
“I was left in shock earlier this year at the funeral of Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s mother. In Bungoma County, I saw entire shopping centers built from mud! Mud houses everywhere! Meanwhile, in Central Kenya, such conditions are unheard of—we eradicated them long ago,” she revealed.
The Cash Crop Divide
Chege attributed Mt. Kenya’s rapid progress to its booming cash crop industry, stating that tea farming and favorable climate conditions have empowered residents to secure bank loans, build permanent homes, and establish financial stability.
But the situation in other regions tells a grim story.
“In Nyanza, I was shocked to learn that many areas still lack clean water. A local told me, ‘We don’t get water because we’ve always supported the opposition.’ Is this what politics has come to? Must you be on the winning side to access basic human needs?” she questioned.
Governors Under Fire
Chege didn’t stop there—she turned her attention to county leaders, blasting them for failing their constituents.
“How does Turkana still suffer from water shortages when the largest aquifer in the region remains untapped? Where is the money going? Where are the priorities?” she demanded.
The Call for Fairness
With tensions rising over resource allocation, Chege made an urgent call for equitable distribution of national funds, insisting that no region should be sidelined based on political affiliations.
“This nation is home to many communities. It is time we start sharing resources fairly. No Kenyan should be left behind!” she declared.
