Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has dismissed criticism from Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka over the ODM-UDA Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), calling out what he sees as double standards.
In a statement dated March 9, Nyong’o questioned Kalonzo’s accusations that Raila Odinga had betrayed the Azimio la Umoja coalition by signing the agreement. He pointed out that Kalonzo himself has been holding private meetings with leaders like former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua without consulting ODM.
“I have seen Kalonzo Musyoka’s concerns about the MoU between ODM and UDA. His argument is that Raila betrayed Azimio by signing the deal. However, Kalonzo has been engaging with other leaders independently, and we have never questioned his actions,” Nyong’o stated.
Nyong’o urged Kalonzo to review the agreement before dismissing it, emphasizing that the MoU is about fostering national unity rather than individual political gains.
“The agreement is meant to strengthen Kenya’s democratic culture and encourage unity among all political movements. Kalonzo still has an opportunity to engage with our leaders if he is willing to contribute to shaping the country’s future,” he added.
His sentiments echoed those of ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who defended the agreement, stating it was not about personal gain but about uniting Kenyans.
Kalonzo had strongly opposed the MoU, branding it a betrayal of the Kenyan people.
