Reality sets in for CJ Martha Koome as Murkomen withdraws her security detail despite her support for Ruto in 2022 – Look!
Chief Justice Martha Koome finds herself in a precarious situation following the withdrawal of her security detail by President William Ruto’s administration, leaving her vulnerable.
In a letter sent to Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Koome raised significant concerns about the removal of her security, emphasizing the constitutional ramifications of this action.
She characterized the withdrawal as a threat to judicial independence.
Koome cautioned that the elimination of her security could disrupt the balance of power within Kenya’s governance system.
“The removal of this security detail is a severe violation of the principle of separation of powers. It undermines the fragile equilibrium essential for democratic governance, where each branch operates independently while acknowledging each other’s autonomy.
“This action not only erodes public confidence in state institutions but also establishes a dangerous precedent, implying that vital constitutional roles can be compromised through external pressures or retaliation,” the letter stated.
Additionally, she highlighted concerns regarding the diminished capacity of the Judiciary Police Unit, criticizing the reduction of numerous officers.
Koome called on the National Police Service to reinstate her security detail, asserting its importance in reinforcing the Judiciary’s independence.
The reasons behind the withdrawal of Koome’s security detail remain unclear, particularly given her role in aiding Ruto’s ascent to the presidency in 2022.
