After former President Uhuru Kenyatta urged Generation Z to stand up for their rights, President William Ruto has offered a pointed response, calling for unity and cautioning against divisive rhetoric.
Speaking during an interdenominational prayer service at Cheptais High School in Bungoma County on Sunday, Ruto subtly criticized Uhuru’s remarks, labeling them as “inciteful.” He stressed the importance of engaging the youth in productive activities rather than fueling confrontation.
“Our young people deserve better. Let us not divide them or pit them against one another. Kenyan youth need jobs and opportunities, not violence or incitement,” Ruto said. He urged leaders to focus on creating avenues for youth empowerment through economic participation instead of stoking tensions.
The President’s response comes after Uhuru’s comments on Friday at the funeral of his cousin, Kibathi Muigai, where he encouraged young people to fight for their rights and protect their future. Uhuru emphasized that Gen Z represents the future of Kenya, urging them not to remain passive as others exploit their opportunities.
“Don’t just watch while your wealth and opportunities are taken from you. Everything worth having is worth fighting for,” Uhuru remarked, adding that inaction would lead to regret.
The former President’s statements sparked mixed reactions, with some viewing them as a rallying cry for youth empowerment, while others, including Ruto’s allies, interpreted them as politically charged.
Environment CS Aden Duale accused Uhuru of trying to destabilize the government, calling his comments irresponsible. Speaking at an event in Garissa, Duale said, “It is unfortunate when leaders, past or present, use their platform to encourage violence or disobedience among the youth. We must uphold peace and stability as a nation.”
He continued, “You had your time in leadership. Now, let the focus be on maintaining peace and giving young people opportunities to thrive.”
The exchange between the two leaders comes amid heightened political tensions, with Ruto and Uhuru’s previously symbolic “handshake” now appearing fragile. Their divergent views have reignited debates over the country’s political stability and the role of youth in shaping Kenya’s future.
Meanwhile, concerns over inflammatory remarks by politicians have escalated. Earlier this month, Dadaab MP Farah Maalim and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah were criticized for comments deemed divisive, but the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has yet to take action.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, political rivalries and alliances continue to intensify, raising questions about the future of national unity and leadership in Kenya.
