KABOGO Commits to Responsible Social media use

KABOGO Takes Charge: Pledges Responsible Social Media Use Amidst RUTO Criticism

Newly appointed Information, Communication, and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary (CS) William Kabogo officially assumed his role yesterday, succeeding Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who had been serving in an acting capacity.

During the handing-over ceremony, Kabogo committed to a measured approach regarding social media criticism of President William Ruto. He urged social media users to maintain responsibility in their postings.

Kabogo announced plans for a sensitization campaign aimed at raising awareness about data privacy protections and other significant digital rights.

He clarified that these initiatives would not infringe on freedom of expression, reiterating the goal of fostering responsible and respectful online behavior.

In response to a viral AI-generated deepfake image depicting President Ruto in a coffin, CS Kabogo expressed alarm at the increasing misuse of digital technology, highlighting the need for ethical online engagement.

“The minute you put someone in a coffin and depict someone in a coffin. It may be fun at your age of 20…what happens when you are 42 and your son is 19 or 20 and someone puts you or depicts you in a coffin. It will not be fun for your children,” Kabogo remarked.

“We should engage with our children and each other to recognize that this field is beneficial. Information is power, but we must act responsibly. We have laws addressing the misuse and abuse of this platform. ”
