Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has cleared President William Ruto and his administration of responsibility for the traffic congestion on the country’s major highways, attributing the issue instead to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
While addressing attendees at the funeral service of Mama Anne Nanyama, Mbadi expressed criticism of significant infrastructure projects initiated during Uhuru’s presidency, particularly in light of the severe congestion faced by travelers during the Christmas season.
He raised concerns about the decision-making processes behind the funding of key infrastructure projects in previous administrations. According to Mbadi, the consequences of flawed fiscal decisions have unfairly led to blame being directed at the current government.
He also questioned the financial rationale behind the construction of certain highways while neglecting others that he believes would yield better benefits, without specifying which roads he meant.
In what may be perceived as a critique of the previous administration, the CS responded to critics of the current government’s economic challenges, stating that the difficulty many Kenyans face in benefiting from a stabilizing economy cannot be wholly attributed to the current leadership.
He further elaborated on the ongoing struggles in the economy, identifying public debt and pending bills as primary factors. “Are you suggesting that these issues arose only after Ruto took office? ” he queried, expressing frustration at those blaming Ruto for rectifying a problem that predates his presidency.
“Why have we forgotten how we ended up in this situation? Why are we holding Ruto accountable for addressing a problem that was initiated before his term? “
