Kioni Stands Firm on Jubilee’s Opposition Role

Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has reaffirmed the party’s position in the opposition, despite recent developments that suggest a shift.

Kioni’s comments came after several Jubilee-affiliated figures were nominated to President William Ruto’s Cabinet, raising questions about the party’s stance. These nominations followed a significant meeting between President Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“We remain in the opposition, as instructed by our party leader. Our focus is on growing the economy,” Kioni declared during a press conference on Monday.

His statement followed remarks by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who defended the meeting between Uhuru and Ruto. Odinga downplayed the interaction, clarifying that it was simply a greeting, not a formal handshake or political agreement.

Regarding the appointment of Uhuru’s allies to the Cabinet, Odinga explained that it was part of Ruto’s plan for an inclusive government, involving members from both Jubilee and ODM. “It’s not a handshake; it’s Ruto’s decision to broaden his government,” Odinga said.

He further emphasized that a true handshake would only occur if an official agreement was made, publicly declared by both Ruto and Uhuru.

The meeting between the two leaders earlier this month at Uhuru’s Gatundu home was aimed at fostering cooperation after years of strained relations. President Ruto clarified that he met with Uhuru to explore ways to work together in the future, especially in securing support from the Mt. Kenya region.
