Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized President William Ruto for overlooking economic issues and increasing abductions while providing parenting guidance.
During an interview with Western region media outlets in Kakamega on Sunday, December 29, Gachagua stated the government should concentrate on addressing urgent problems.
“We elected you to manage the country’s economy, not to dictate how parents should raise their children,” he stated.
Gachagua’s comments followed Ruto’s address at Raila Odinga Stadium, where he urged parents to take initiative in mentoring and safeguarding their children to promote peace.
“We all want to move forward together. I urge all parents that our children are a gift from God, and you should care for them while the government fulfills its responsibilities,” Ruto emphasized.
He promised to put an end to current abductions in the nation.
“Concerning abductions, we will stop them, enabling Kenyan youth to live in peace and maintain order, allowing us to build Kenya collaboratively,” Ruto stated.
The recent rise in abductions, involving seven individuals in December connected to social media critiques of the government, has ignited public anger.
Among those abducted are Steve Mbisi, Billy Mwangi, and cartoonist Gideon Kibet, known as Kibet Bull.
Naomi, one of the abducted individuals, has been located, but others remain unaccounted for.
Gachagua dismissed Ruto’s comments as insufficient and charged the administration with failing to tackle vital concerns such as economic mismanagement, public fund embezzlement, and state capture.
“Even if the entire country is abducted, unresolved matters will continue. Merely stating you will end abductions is not adequate; we need to see the released individuals,” he remarked.
He further accused the government of diminishing its credibility and support among Kenyans, urging young people to persist in advocating for change through online channels and to register to vote.
“The government must address the issues that are fueling Kenyan discontent instead of resorting to desperate measures like silencing critics,” he stated.
