Acting ODM Party Leader Anyang’ Nyong’o is reluctant to take over from former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as ODM Party leader.
During an interview, Nyong’o warned other leaders who aspire to replace Raila Odinga to avoid having ungrounded ambitions.
Although the Kisumu Governor acknowledged that numerous young leaders in the party aspire to succeed the ODM chief if he is elected at the AU in 2025, he warned them against having ungrounded ambitions that could jeopardize their careers.
According to Nyong’o, young leaders in the party must comprehend the party’s requirements and the leadership expectations necessary at different levels, particularly that of the party leader.
“These are young individuals who should have ambitions, and that is natural. However, they need to be pragmatic. You may have been in the party for two or three years, but the party’s history extends beyond that,” he remarked.
“There are numerous aspects you must learn about being part of the party and being in leadership positions. Unfounded ambition may not be the most beneficial trait to possess. Unfounded ambition is quite perilous as it could lead you to political ruin. “
Prominent leaders expressing interest in succeeding Raila as the party leader include Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
In the meantime, the governor mentioned that he is performing his responsibilities on a temporary basis while the party prepares for the AU elections in February 2025.
He mentioned that despite his role as the acting party leader, he occasionally seeks guidance from the former premier regarding various decisions made within the party.
