Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot recounted his near confrontation with President William Ruto following the first deduction of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) from his monthly salary.
Speaking at Kipsitet Primary School in Kericho County during an interdenominational church service, Cheruiyot acknowledged his initial concerns regarding the new government health scheme. “To be honest, this is not an easy burden to bear,” the Senator remarked.
“When NHIF (National Health Insurance Fund) was operational, my deduction was only Ksh1700 from my Ksh1 million salary. ” However, upon receiving my October salary, I nearly reached out to you, Mr. President. I was deducted Ksh32,000.
“However, upon realizing that the funds would assist an underprivileged Kenyan who supported me, I accepted the deduction, as I prefer the money to benefit ordinary Kenyans,” he stated.
The Senator also encouraged the residents of Kericho to register for the newly rebranded SHIF, now known as Taifa Care, as the government strives to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Cheruiyot further criticized the previous NHIF, which he claims was plagued by widespread corruption and malpractice, asserting that such issues would be eliminated through the modern claims management system (CMS) implemented by SHIF.
