JANET MUTHONI-OUKO, IN THE STAR, THUR 15 AUG 2024.

“I know Ruto would argue that the universities had huge debts and were running out of money. But the question is, what did they do with the loans they took? How did they accumulate such huge debts?”

“Most of these universities had self-sponsored programmes where they minted huge amounts of money. Why didn’t they sell the properties they acquired using the monies to set off the debts?”

“Ruto is listening to Vice Chancellors more than other education sector stakeholders. The Vice Chancellors are praising the the new university funding model because they want the cash burden transferred to parents. They’re happy to bar students from sitting exams to extract as much money from parents are possible.”

“They don’t want to tell Ruto the truth – that the system is not working. It will also breed corruption massively in the allocation of loans and scholarships because, as with most things in Kenya, it will depend on who you know.”
