In an unexpected and very controversial move, the security detail assigned to Siaya Governor James Orengo has been quietly withdrawn by state authorities, and it has already set off fresh concerns over the safety of opposition leaders.
The abrupt pulling back of his protection comes just a few hours after the veteran politician released a sharp critique of the government over recent incidents involving police brutality. Sources close to the governor’s office confirmed that the security personnel were recalled without any prior notice or even a proper official explanation.
This withdrawal, according to political observers , has been read as a calculated intimidation tactic, meant to silence the governor after his outspoken condemnation of state – led violence during the recent anti-government demonstrations.
Governor Orengo, who has remained in the forefront of pushing for an independent inquiry into alleged state-sanctioned killings during protests, publicly denounced what he described as “targeted attacks on journalists and demonstrators.” Speaking from Siaya on Tuesday, Orengo warned that the government’s habit of using excessive force is steadily eroding the rule of law and also weakening the country’s democratic foundations.
Meanwhile, the removal of his security is being viewed as a direct escalation in the ongoing tension between the executive branch and regional leaders who question the status quo.
Political analysts suggest it aligns with a wider practice of using state apparatus to pressure opposition figures who openly resist, especially around fiscal policies such as the current fuel tax regime that has ignited unrest across the country.
The governor’s supporters have voiced real outrage, like they cannot ignore it, because they feel that keeping him in the open would somehow endanger his life. By Wednesday evening, neither the National Police Service nor the Ministry of Interior had shared any official word about the sudden recall of the detail; it’s kind of unsettling.
