Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, who goes by the name Jalang’o, has made an astonishing political declaration in Kenya’s capital city by announcing his plan to run against existing Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who serves as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General for the Nairobi Senate seat, during the upcoming 2027 General Election.
The declaration that Radio 47 broadcasted on Tuesday results in a major transformation to Nairobi’s political landscape, while it shows an upcoming fierce battle between two prominent political leaders who represent the city.
Jalang’o, who won the Lang’ata parliamentary seat in 2022 through the ODM party, confirmed his decision to leave his current position in order to compete for the senatorial seat because he has acquired leadership skills through his work with various communities throughout Nairobi.
The announcement that he made came after public speculation about his political future, which was driven by his public appearances with senior politicians such as former Lang’ata MP Nixon Korir and South C Ward MCA Abass Khalif, who has already started his campaign for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat in the upcoming 2027 elections.
Jalang’o declared through his statement that he possesses adequate skills to serve as Senate representative for the people of Nairobi. Jalang’o needs to demonstrate to observers that his political skills extend beyond his celebrity image, according to observers.
The move places Sifuna under intense pressure because he is both an experienced politician and a prominent member of the OD movement. Sifuna has recently faced mounting criticism within his party ranks, including from senior leaders questioning his strategic choices and public statements, underscoring internal frictions that could factor into voter sentiment ahead of 2027.
