ODM Power Shift as Ruth Odinga Throws Hat in 2027 Presidential Ring Amid Leadership Turmoil

A political bomb that directly activated the scenario of discussions in the political circles of the country was the proclamation of Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga announcing that she is open for the position of the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, should the party not find a suitable one.

The words spoken on the morning of Thursday, December 25, 2025, have made ODM to introspect more deeply about the way and where it is going strategically especially after the demise of its leader, Raila Odinga, who had been with them.

At a meeting in Nyamira, the place where the Odinga political legacy is strongest, Ruth Odinga said to the party that the Orange Party is still a very powerful political force and can put forward a presidential candidate.

She called upon the past ODM leaders to join hands to build up the party’s base at the grassroots level thereby keeping it alive even after the passing of its leader. Her statement was then posted on her social media and it sparked instant discussions in political circles.

“If ODM does not find someone suitable within the party to contest the top seat in 2027, talk to me,” Ruth Odinga stated, underlining her readiness to step into the contest.

She emphasized that ODM should expand its appeal beyond its traditional base and revive the momentum that defined its past electoral successes.

The intervention comes amid deepening divisions within ODM over whether to field a candidate at all or consider other political arrangements.

A faction within the party has openly expressed disquiet over potential directionless leadership discussions and warned that a failure to unite could undermine ODM’s relevance and electoral prospects.
