Maraga Declares Kenya Has Derailed, Accuses Leaders of Turning Citizens Into Subjects.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has declared that his bid for the 2027 presidency is driven by a deep conviction: Kenya must return to the foundational principles of the 2010 Constitution. Speaking at the opening of this year’s Human Rights Defenders Academy in Nairobi, Maraga warned that the country has drifted off course and must be “redirected back onto its rails.”

Maraga told participants that many Kenyans, especially young people, deeply understand and cherish the constitution, but that its full implementation remains elusive. “We have one of the best constitutions in the world. But that constitution is not being implemented,” he said.

He added that he did not seek power for its own sake. “I have not aspired to come to that position to seek power for power’s sake. … My aim … is to get the country back on its rails,” Maraga declared.

Maraga sharply criticized current leadership, accusing them of seeing citizens as subjects rather than serving them. He pledged to fight corruption and hold human rights violators accountable if elected.

On his vision for governance, Maraga emphasized meritocracy and constitutionalism. He said he plans to build a government of professionals who will be held to high standards — not because of political loyalty, but because of competency.

To back up his campaign, Maraga has already raised significant public support. His fundraising website collected more than KSh 500,000 in just 48 hours, largely from ordinary Kenyans and diaspora donors, a sign of growing grassroots appetite for his kind of reform.

Maraga has also rejected pressure to bow out of the race. In a recent address to United Green Movement coordinators, he said his decision to run is “irreversible” and reaffirmed his commitment to restoring constitutional order.

Bottom line: Maraga’s campaign centers not on traditional politics, but on a constitutional reset. For him, the presidency is not just about winning — it’s about restoring the rule of law and guiding Kenya back to its founding values.
