21-Year-Old Girl Waiting To Join University Found Dead In Septic Tank.

In a harrowing incident shaking the community in Kakamega County, the lifeless body of a 21-year-old woman was recovered from a septic pit just metres from her home after she had gone missing for three days. The woman, who had been waiting to join university, vanished on October 24, 2025; her decomposed remains were discovered on October 27.

The Discovery

The victim, identified as Wendy Edda, disappeared from her home in Jua Kali Phase 2 Estate, Kakamega, on the evening of October 24. Family members raised the alarm after she failed to return and attempts to reach her phone went unanswered.
Three days later, local security personnel found her body in a sewage pit located within close proximity to the house. The family immediately rejected suggestions that her death was the result of an accident or misstep. Her mother, Lilia Lichina, insisted foul play was involved, citing previous threats made against her daughter and the suspicious behaviour of a man living nearby.

Family’s Claims Raise Alarms

According to the mother, her daughter had reported being harassed by a neighbour who made unsolicited advances. When Wendy went missing, Lichina confronted the suspect, who allegedly laughed off the disappearance. “This man is my first suspect,” the mother said.
The father, Levi Mate, expressed deep anguish and vowed to work with authorities until justice is served. He said: “Even if he exploited our daughter, I would have preferred she was alive; but to kill her and dump her body in a pit is unbearable.”

  • The proximity of the septic pit to the residence suggests the disposal was deliberate and hurried — not an accidental fall.
  • The fact that Wendy was about to begin university heightens the tragedy: a promising life cut short under suspicious circumstances.
  • Local authorities must determine whether this is an isolated incident or part of a larger pattern of violence against young women in the area.
  • For regional law enforcement, the case is a test of responsiveness: delays or mis-management could further erode public trust.

Investigators with the local police in Kakamega County have launched a full inquiry into the incident. They are expected to:

  • Conduct forensic examinations of the body and pit to establish cause of death and time.
  • Interview potential witnesses and the suspect identified by the family.
  • Examine CCTV or community-recorded footage in the neighbourhood for any suspicious movements.
  • Mobilise community patrols and public awareness campaigns to protect vulnerable youths awaiting tertiary education.
