Former President Edgar Lungu of Zambia. President William Ruto has expressed heartfelt condolences to the Zambian people following the passing of former President Edgar Lungu at the age of 68.

In his homage, Ruto characterized Lungu as a committed and visionary leader who dedicated himself to Zambia’s progress.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to Lungu’s family and the people of Zambia for his unexpected passing,” stated the President.

“President Lungu was an exceptional leader who approached his role with enthusiasm and dedication. May God grant the Zambian people solace and strength during this sorrowful period. Rest In Peace. ”

Lungu died on Thursday while undergoing medical care in South Africa.

His daughter, Tasila Lungu, a member of Zambia’s National Assembly, confirmed his passing via a video message.

While the exact cause of death has not been specified, it is noted that Lungu had been under treatment for weeks.

The late leader took office from 2015 to 2021.

He initially rose to leadership after the passing of President Michael Sata and subsequently secured a full term in the 2016 elections.

After his defeat to President Hakainde Hichilema in 2021, Lungu withdrew from public life but re-entered politics in 2023 to align with the opposition.

In late 2024, Zambia’s Constitutional Court determined he was ineligible to run for president again due to constitutional term limits.

Despite facing both accolades and criticism during his administration—particularly concerning governance and corruption—Lungu remained a significant figure in Zambian politics until his passing.

Leaders throughout Africa have shared messages of condolence, with many acknowledging his impact on Zambia’s political landscape
