United Opposition Moves to Cement 2027 Presidential Candidate

In a surprising twist that has instantly changed the political landscape in Kenya before election time, the leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front, Kalonzo Musyoka, announced that the United Opposition will declare their presidential candidate as early as the beginning of 2026, which will lead to a tough face-off against the bid of President William Ruto for re-election.

In a televised interview on Friday, December 26, 2025, Kalonzo said that the opposition leaders want to accomplish their internal discussions before the end of the first quarter of the coming year, a step that he said would be important in offering Kenyans clarity and spreading doubts over electoral malpractice.

He stated that a decision on the presidential candidate sooner rather than later will allow Kenyans to have enough time to look at the leadership qualifications and get ready for the fight at the elections.

This news brings to the scene a very forceful political confrontation in the country where the opposition has been fighting against their own leadership by mishandling, raising hopes, and then over-disappointing through their different tactics.

Kalonzo reiterated the fact that feeding the coalition’s principal players will be done, which includes former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, PLP’s Martha Karua, and former Interior Ministry Head Fred Matiang’i, among others, to come up with one strong candidate who can beat the incumbent.

Insiders recommend that an early decision on the candidate is a move to prevent internal rifts that have so far hindered the opposition from being united and thus given the ruling party, Kenya Kwanza, a free hand in the political arena during campaigns.

To the surface of this determination towards unity came the covering of cracks by quoting the unfortunate history of past coalitions in Kenya.

The deadline is additionally putting Kalonzo’s presidential ambitions under the spotlight of speculation.

He was quite optimistic about working together with the coalition; however, experts point out that internal conflicts and differing criteria for candidates might still make it hard to reach an agreement prior to the end of the first quarter.

The latest statements made by the opposition indicate that a unified front is being presented by the leaders; however, there is still uncertainty.
