Uganda Suspends Military Cooperation with Germany Amid Allegations of Subversive Activities

Uganda has announced the immediate suspension of all military and defense cooperation with Germany, citing allegations that German Ambassador to Kampala, Matthias Schauer, has engaged in subversive activities within the country. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) released a statement on Sunday confirming the decision, which will remain in effect until a full resolution is reached.

The UPDF’s spokesperson, Col. Chris Magezi, stated that the suspension follows “credible intelligence reports” indicating that Ambassador Schauer is involved in activities deemed hostile to Uganda’s interests. The statement further accused the ambassador of being connected to “hostile pseudo-political-military forces” operating against the Ugandan government.

This development marks a significant deterioration in the bilateral relations between Uganda and Germany, particularly in the defense sector. The suspension encompasses all defense and military cooperation programs, including joint training exercises, intelligence sharing, and capacity-building initiatives. The decision underscores Uganda’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and national security interests.

The German Embassy in Kampala has yet to issue an official response to the allegations. However, the diplomatic community is closely monitoring the situation, as it may have broader implications for international relations and defense cooperation in the region.

This move by Uganda follows a pattern of strengthening military ties with other African nations. In recent months, Uganda has signed military cooperation.
