Tensions Explode as Nairobi MCAs Reveal They Were Threatened to Drop Sakaja’s Impeachment.

In a shocking escalation of political pressure, several Nairobi County Assembly members claim they were threatened and coerced into abandoning the impeachment motion targeting Governor Johnson Sakaja—triggering nationwide concern over democratic integrity and rule of law.

Ward representatives from both the ruling and opposition sides report that coercion came with the clear implication: shelving the impeachment could secure their political futures, while defiance risked the opposite.

One MCA bluntly declared, “We were coerced to shelve Sakaja’s ouster,” signaling intimidation had replaced open debate in the capital’s legislative chambers. The move to suspend the impeachment followed high-level interventions. ODM ward MCAs were summoned to a meeting called by Raila Odinga, while UDA-affiliated MCAs met separately with President William Ruto.

Reports reveal that during these encounters, some legislators were warned they risked losing their party nominations if they pressed ahead with the ouster motion.MCAs say the pressure backfired—sparking deep resentment.

Embakasi MCA Benjamin Gathiri condemned the pact as betrayal. “It is shameful when the voices of Nairobians are sidelined while political heavyweights enforce their agendas,” he stated forcefully.Despite the coercion, voices in the Assembly remain defiant.

Several MCAs warn the impeachment motion could re-emerge within a month, once the political dust settles and the 2027 nominations loom large.

The episode shines a harsh light on Kenya’s political reality, where democratic processes are increasingly vulnerable to power plays, and public accountability takes a backseat to political expediency.
