Suspect in murder of RIAT student arrested as body found in forest

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have found the decomposed body of a 21-year-old female student from RIAT College in Kisumu.
The DCI claims that after the student’s reported disappearance, officers from Kisumu West, in collaboration with police from Maseno and Riat police stations, began investigations.

The victim is believed to have been tortured and killed at the Milimani area on the night of April 5, 2026. Police on Monday reported that the student’s body was found in RIAT forest in Kisumu.

According to the police, the victim’s body was bearing knife stub wounds. The prime suspect, Steven Coleman Okoth, was earlier arrested and is alleged to have orchestrated her gang rape, torture and subsequent disappearance.

According to authorities, the student’s sister initially expressed concern about her location following fruitless attempts to contact her. Investigations into her disappearance were sparked by a disturbing message that was received later that evening.

The victim’s final known movements were traced by detectives to the Milimani area of Kisumu, which is close to the Kenya Wildlife Service offices. She was not located right away, despite an initial search.

Officers identified Okoth, the victim’s ex-boyfriend as the leading suspect after conducting more investigations. According to police, he was seen with the student on the night she vanished and had allegedly threatened her in the months preceding the incident.

Detectives found things deemed important to the investigation at the time of the arrest. While police continue to look for other people they suspect of being involved, the suspect is being processed for arraignment.
