Ruto Shrugs Off Opposition Shake-Up, Declares Azimio ‘Politically Dead’ and Unfit to Block His 2027 Bid

The recent leadership changes within the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition have no significance, according to President William Ruto, who considers them unimportant because they do not present any danger to his upcoming 2027 re-election campaign. His comments represent a major increase in the political competition that already exists between different groups in Kenya as they prepare for upcoming elections.

Ruto questioned the ability of a new Azimio organization to function after he conducted an official event in Nairobi’s Embakasi area on Sunday, February 8. Ruto called the new opposition group dead on arrival because it lacked support from the Orange Democratic Movement, which served as a vital component of its former structure. Ruto declared that Azimio will face defeat during the early morning hours of 2027 because he believes the organization lacks the political strength to fight against his administration.

The president made his statement after former President Uhuru Kenyatta led a controversial leadership reshuffle that assigned Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as coalition leader and Caroli Omondi as secretary-general within the Azimio organization. The coalition faces intense internal disputes because ODM has declared the maneuvers to be unapproved actions that violate legal standards.

According to senior Azimio officials, State House has used its power to prevent the official announcement of leadership changes because they claim State House is disrupting the necessary publication procedures established by Kenyan political party regulations.

Ruto used the ongoing disputes to demonstrate that his political opponents were disorganized and lacked any unified plan. He disputed Azimio’s internal legitimacy while showing his campaign had complete unity and operational readiness.
